How to use Tilly
Want to create your own AI-powered chatbot for your course, project, or team? With Tilly, you can set up a fully functional chatbot in just a few steps — no technical background required.
This step-by-step guide walks you through the entire process, from logging in to sharing and analyzing your chatbot.

Step 1: Access your account
Log in using:
- With your institutional account (SSO)
- As an external user
Tilly automatically detects whether you're a student, lecturer, staff member, or external user, so you can access the tools relevant to you.

Step 2: Explore Tilly workspace
After signing in, you'll arrive at your workspace.
Here's what you'll find:
Chat workspace:
This is where you interact with chatbots. Start a conversation by typing your question in the chat box.
Sidebar:
- All chatbots and conversations are listed on the left side.
- Tilly, our main chatbot, is always available for questions about the platform or anything else you'd like to explore.
- You can start a new conversation by clicking New chat or selecting Tilly directly.
To build your first chatbot, click Create a new chatbot.

Step 3: Create your chatbot
In the creation screen, you'll find:
- Bot name — Enter a clear, descriptive name (for example, "Economics"). This is the name users will see.
- Chatbot instructions — Define how your chatbot should behave and respond. Specify the tone (supportive, formal, concise), the role (tutor, examiner, coach), and the teaching approach (step-by-step guidance, Socratic questioning, summaries).
- Upload knowledge (optional) — Upload lecture slides, course notes, memos, or research papers to build your chatbot's knowledge base. Maximum file size: 2GB.
- Live preview — As you edit, the preview updates automatically. You can test responses in real time by interacting with the chatbot on the right.
When you're ready, click Create in the top right corner. Your chatbot will be live immediately.

Step 4: Share and manage access
Open your chatbot and select Share chatbot from the top menu.
You can choose between:
- Invite people — Add email addresses and assign roles (for example, collaborator or chat-only access).
- Share via link — Generate a shareable link and copy it.
- Institutional access — Grant access to selected institutions, if applicable.
Collaborators may be able to edit or delete the chatbot depending on their role, so assign permissions carefully.

Step 5: Track usage and analytics
Select Usage from the top menu of your chatbot.
You'll see an overview including:
- Total chats
- Number of users
- Average messages per chat
- Number of uploaded documents
The activity section shows chat trends over time, including conversations started per day. Use these insights to understand engagement and refine your chatbot when needed.
